Ambassador's visit to Astrakhan from 4-6 April 2013

With a view to further strengthening India’s cooperation with Russia’s regions, H.E. Mr. Ajai Malhotra, Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation, visited Astrakhan Region from April 4-6, 2013. The Ambassador had separate meetings with the Governor of Astrakhan Region HE Mr. Alexander Zhilkin; the Mayor of Astrakhan HE Mr. Mikhail Stolyarov; the Deputy Chairman and Minister of Economic Development of Astrakhan Region, HE Ms.Elina Polyanskaya; the Minister of Industry, Transport and Natural Resources of Astrakhan Region, HE Mr. Sergey N. Krzhanovskiy; and the Minister of International and Foreign Economic Relations of Astrakhan Region, HE Mr. Denis Afanasiev. India has good trade and economic ties with Astrakhan region and enhanced cooperation in trade, investment, culture and other fields, was explored. The Ambassador also visited a company manufacturing glass wool fibre and a new product called “Displair” for making displays in the air that has potential use in advertising etc.

The Ambassador later visited the Astrakhan State Technical University (where an Indian student is pursuing shipbuilding design), the Astrakhan State Medical Academy, the Astrakhan Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Zyyozdny Sports and Entertainment Complex, the Astrakhan Kremlin, the Astrakhan State Regional Studies Museum, the Museum House of the merchant Tetyushchev, and the Astrakhan Dogadin State Art Gallery. The Ambassador also met with Ms. Svetlana Sukhova, Head of the PADMA Indian Cultural Centre, Astrakhan, and witnessed cultural performances by members of the Centre.

Separately, Mrs. Ira Malhotra visited “Correction and Development”, a government rehabilitation centre for disabled children & teenagers, and “Ulitka”, a government specialised social and rehabilitation centre for minor girls, both of which are functioning in Astrakhan.
