1st All-Russian Congress of Ayurveda held at Moscow from 12-13 April 2013

With the support of the Embassy of India, Moscow, and others, the 1st All-Russian Congress of Ayurveda was held at the I.M. Scehenov First Moscow State Medical University from April 12-13, 2013. The opening ceremony was conducted by Professor Vadim Zilov, Head of Non-drug Therapies & Clinical Physiology, I.M. Scehenov First Moscow State Medical University and attended by Ms. Madhumita Hazarika Bhagat, Director (JNCC), Embassy of India, Moscow, on behalf of H.E. Mr. Ajai Malhotra, Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation.


In his message of congratulations to the organizers and participants, read out by Ms. Bhagat, Ambassador Malhotra expressed satisfaction that Ayurveda is gaining popularity in Russia. He stated that the credit for this goes not only to Indian experts practicing Ayurveda in Russia for many years but also to Russian experts and the people of Russia. He expressed confidence that the Congress, which is a joint effort by Russian and Indian Ayurveda experts, will be a catalyst for the wider acceptance and further popularization of Ayurveda in Russia. He also conveyed his gratitude and special appreciation to Hon'ble Mr. S.V. Kalashnikov, Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection, for his unstinted support for the Congress as well as to the I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Russian Professional Medical Association of Traditional and Popular Medicine, Ayurveda Russian-Indian Association and the Professional Psychotherapeutic League, who were amongst the Congress organisers.

Amongst participants in the Congress were Mr. Peter V. Glybochko, Rector, I.M. Scehenov First Moscow State Medical University, Mr. Vladimir Vladimirovich Egorov, Assistant Chairman, Committee on Health Protection, Mr. Sergey Borisovich Dorofev, Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Health Protection, Prof. Alexander N. Razumov, Director, Doctor of Medicine, Academician of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, Dr. Kuldip Raj Kohli, Director, Directorate of Ayurveda, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Maharashtra, Ms. Anita Karilio Arkas, President, Ayurveda Russian-Indian Association, Dr. S. Gopakumar, Associate Professor, Government Ayurveda College, Kannur, Kerala and Mr. Vladimir Yegorov, President, Russian professional medical associations of traditional & popular medicine. Speaking about the possibility of using Ayurveda drugs in Russian health and medical practice, Mr. Egorov assured that the State Duma Committee on Health Protection, would intensify efforts to promote Ayurveda in Russia.

The main areas of discussion during the Congress, included possibilities of application of Ayurveda in complementary medicine system of Russia; fundamental principles of Ayurveda; relevance and application in quality of life and longevity; the possibility of using Ayurveda drugs in health and medical practice; and the possibility of Ayurvedic education in Russia. Another pertinent topic was the experiences of use of Ayurvedic system in treatment of children with cerebral paralysis, bronchial asthma and gastroenterological disorders; unique features of Ayurveda dietetics; modern medicine and Ayurveda. Opportunities & problems in registration of Ayurvedic medicines; the practice of Ayurveda in Russia and teaching students the practical skills of Ayurvedic medicine; experience of implementation of Ayurveda in Russia as well as the possibility of use of Ayurvedic methods in clinical & health promotion practice were other important issues discussed. Efficacy of Ayurvedic medicines; recent research outcomes including use of Ayurveda techniques in spa and fitness centers; relevance of Marma therapy in injury management and health promotion in sports personnel; application of Ayurvedic know-how in wellness and Fitness centres; were also discussed. A few prominent pharmaceutical establishments also displayed their ayurvedic products at the venue.
