Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation popularly known as "ITEC" was launched by a decision of the Indian Cabinet on September 15, 1964 as a bilateral programme of assistance of the Government of India. Under it and its corollary SCAAP 156 countries in Asia, Africa, East Europe, Central & Latin America, Pacific and Small Island countries are invited to share in the Indian Development experience acquired over five decades of our existence as a free nation. India spends about Rs.500 million annually on ITEC activities.
India possesses a rich experience in the field of economic development as well as manpower skills and technologies suited to the requirements of developing countries. ITEC is one of the vehicles for the sharing of these experiences with IndiaТs friends.
ITEC is also the flag-carrier of the Indian GovernmentТs technical cooperation effort, not only for its wide geographical coverage, but also for the innovative forms of technical cooperation which it has assisted. These range from schools in the Maldives, the restoration of the historic city of Ankor Vat in Kampuchea, street-lighting in Cuba using solar power, increasing milk production in Kyrgyzstan and teaching English to students in Vietnam.
