Intensifying bilateral cooperation with Tomsk region

The Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation, Shri P.S. Raghavan, visited Tomsk region from May 18-20, 2015. He was accompanied by the Embassy officials and representatives from the Indian business Community in Moscow.

In meeting with H.E. Mr. Sergey Zhvachkin, Governor of the Tomsk Region, the Ambassador discussed wide ranging issues of bilateral cooperation and further means to diversify and intensify the cooperation. The two sides agreed to lay special emphasis on cooperation in educational, economic and cultural fields.

Ambassador Raghavan and the delegation visited Special Economic Zone in Tomsk. Representatives of regional companies made presentations about their activities and expressed keen interest in collaborating with Indian companies. The delegation also visited the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Tomsk region and discussed various opportunities and means to enhance bilateral economic cooperation by exploiting the exiting potentials.

Ambassador Raghavan met the Mayor of Tomsk city, Mr. Ivan Klein, and discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation especially in fields of trade, investment, culture, education and tourism.

The Ambassador discussed means of enhancing bilateral contacts in academic field with Tomsk Consortium of Scientific, Educational and Research Institutions which was attended by Rectors of six member universities and ten research institutes.

Ambassador Raghavan visited Tomsk State University and delivered a lecture to students on “India – Russia Relations” which was followed by an interactive session which dwelt on various aspects of bilateral relationship.

The delegation visited the facility of a prominent enterprise, Micran, which is engaged in spheres of microwave electronics, communications, radio location, test and measurement equipment and information security.

The Ambassador and the delegation visited oil fields which are being developed by Imperial Energy, a subsidiary of ONGC Videsh Limited, in the Tomsk region. The venture is a major Indian investment in Russia amounting to more that US$ 2 billion.

The delegation met representatives of local cultural & yoga centres, discussed their activities and invited their active participation in the upcoming first International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2015.

During the visit, Mrs. Barbara Raghavan, President of Indian Women's Asssociation donated Rubles 100,000 to Non-commercial Children’s Charity Fund, Tomsk, as a contribution to the charitable work being done by it. She met Ms. Alena Petrova, Director of the Fund and discussed the charitable activities undertaken by them. The Fund supports medical treatment for children suffering from oncological diseases.

The reception hosted by Ambassador and Mrs Barabara Raghavan was attended by a wide cross-section of Tomsk society, including government, academicians, businesspersons and members of the Indian business and student community. A group from PARAMPARA cultural centre performed traditional dances at the reception.
