Enhancing Cooperation between Astrakhan and India

At the invitation of the Governor of Astrakhan, the Ambassador of India to the Russian Federation. Shri P.S. Raghavan, visited Astrakhan region from April 28-29, 2015. He was accompanied by the Embassy officials and representatives from the Indian business Community in Moscow.

The delegation was warmly received by the regional authorities and businesses. At the meeting with H.E. Mr. Alexander Zhilkin, Governor of the Astrakhan Region, the two sides highlighted the active & close long-standing friendship between India and Astrakhan and the enormous potential to intensify mutual cooperation in economic, trade, education, tourism and cultural exchanges. Continued cooperation in activating International North South Transport Corridor was identified as important area for enhancement of bilateral trade, economic and investment activities. Astrakhan cooperates actively with Gujarat under a programme of cooperation signed in 2001. Prime Minister Modi visited the region in 2006 when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat.

Chamber of Commerce & Industry of the Astrakhan region organized an interaction between the business persons from both the sides. Indian and Russian companies made presentations about their activities and interests during the event which was attended by businesspersons from different sectors including logistics, chemicals, education, tourism, shipbuilding, Ayurveda, agriculture and food processing sectors.

A wide range of areas for mutual cooperation were discussed by the Ambassador with H.E. Mr. K. Markelov, Deputy Governor, Chairman of the Astrakhan Government. The meeting was attended by Ministers of Economic Development; Industry, Transport, Natural Resources; Culture and Tourism; Healthcare and Education. Indian business persons informed about their interests in the region which were positively noted by the Astrakhan side.

The regional government organized a separate meeting, led by Minister of Industry, Transport, Natural Resources of Astrakhan, on International North South Transport Corridor project which included all stakeholders like shipping lines, customs authorities, port authorities, veterinary & health authorities, container-freight forwarders and customs brokers. Indian business persons involved in logistics and freight-forwarding services actively exchanged views and ideas on activating North-South Transport Corridor. Ambassador invited the regional authorities and other stakeholders to participate in a conference which is planned on June 12, 2015 in Mumbai on this issue.

The delegation met representatives of local cultural & yoga centres, discussed their activities and invited their active participation in the upcoming first International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2015.

The reception hosted Ambassador and Mrs Barabara Raghavan was attended by a wide cross-section of Astrakhan society, including government, academicians, businesspersons and members of the Indian business and student community. A group from PADMA cultural centre of Astrakhan performed traditional and Bollywood dances at the reception.
