The poor conditions at the touchdown points in India are a thing of the past. The massive modernization programme comprising all keys metros and as many as 35 non- metros has begun to show results on the ground. The country is fast moving towards the stage wherein it would have a show results on the ground. T3 Terminal
Developed by GMR- led Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the swanky new world-class airport is expected to handle 34 million passengers annually. Besides three functional runways, T3 will have 168 check-in counters, 78 aerobridges, 97 travelators and a multi-level air-conditioned car park to accommodate 4,300 cars. Built at a cost of Rs 12,000 crore, Terminal 3 boasts of being the eighth largest passenger terminal in the world. T3 has set a new benchmark for upcoming infrastructure in India. Against the usual time of sixty months, this modern masterpiece has been completed in a record 37 months.

Mumbai Airport
The Mumbai Airport is being modernized by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), a consortium of GVK Industries and Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). The airport has been designed to expand and upgrade infrastructure to cater for 40 mppa. Some of the changes that have taken place at the airport in the recent past include refurbishment and construction at Terminal 2, revamp of Terminal 1A and upgrade of the airside runway facilities such as rapid exit taxiways to increase runaway capacity to cater to traffic growth. The phase 1 expansion which is expected to be completed by 2010 includes creation of a brand new terminal building (T2) catering to both international and domestic operations. There will also be construction of Terminal 1C and enhancement of the airside facilities by shifting the air control tower. Construction of a parallel taxiway among other things will also take place.

Hyderabad Airport
Commencing operations in March 2008, the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad is being developed in three phases. In the first phase of development, Terminal 1, with the capacity to handle 12 million passengers per annum has been constructed. During the second phase, Terminal 1 will be expanded to an area of 250,000 sq mt from the current 105,000 sq mt to cater to growing demand. The airport will reach its full maturity after the third phase when it will see an additional floor area of 430,000 sq mt and will be capable of handling 40 mppa.

Bengaluru Airport
Inaugurated in May 2008, Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL) is capable of handling 12 mppa. The passenger terminal is a single, fully air- conditioned, four-level building capable of accommodating international and domestic operations. The total floor area is approximately 71,000 sq mt and the terminal building is designed to accommodate 3,000 passengers at peak hour. The arrival and departure areas are separated vertically with a modern, simple, straight-ahead flow system. The airport has 20 gates, 9 aerobridges, including one double arm and 19 remote bus bays. There are a total of 42 aircraft stands, all of which have a fueling pit. There are plans to build a second runway when the annual traffic of the airport reaches 18 million passengers per year which is currently estimated to reach around 2013 – 2014.

Non Metro Airports
The government’s target of 35 non-metro airports by 2010 is now reaching the finishing line with the initial results of the massive non-metro airports modernization programme falling in place. Early this year, three new refurbished airports: Amritsar International Airport, Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun and Jaipur International Airport were unveiled. In addition, the construction of a new terminal building at Udaipur airport, a tourism hotspot, has also been completed and unveiled.
The civil aviation ministry’s latest report card states that a number of non-metro airports such as Vizag (Andhra Pradesh), Surat (Gujarat), Aurangabad (Maharashtra), Nagpur (Maharashtra) and Trichy (Tamil Nadu) will be modernized over the next six months. And then there are other airports like Raipur (Chattisgarh), Ahmedabad (Gujarat), Ranchi (Jharkhand),Mangalore (Karnataka), Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Pune (Maharashtra), Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu), Madurai (Tamil Nadu) and khajuraho (Madhya Pradesh) where new terminals are being built or the existing ones are being completely modified. All these projects are slated to be completed before the end of 2010.
