PM SINGH – President Medvedev meet in Brasillia

A bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Dmitry Medvedev was held in Brasilia on 15 April, 2010 on the side lines of the BRIC Summit.

BRIC Summit Ends With Ambitious and Far-Ranging Declaration

The second BRIC Summit was held in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia on 15 April 2010, following which the leaders issued a far-ranging joint statement. BRIC is a group of four countries whose initials give the group its name: Brazil, the Russian Federation, India and China. The four leaders at this summit were Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Russian President Dimitry Medvedev, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Chinese president Hu Jintao.
The joint statement issued by the four leaders at this summit underscored their resolve to take concrete steps to expand cooperation and coordination within BRIC.

The statement was a wide-ranging document encompassing a large field of issues, programs and interests. It included 33 resolutions, many of which call for major changes in the way things are done and run in today’s world. Amongst other resolutions, the four leaders called for transformations in global governance to reflect the major and swift changes the world is undergoing today. They voiced their support for a multi-polar, equitable and democratic world order based on international law, equality, mutual respect, cooperation, coordinated action and collective decision-making of all states. Presidents Condolence Message
President Medvedev sent a condolence message to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressing grief at the loss of lives and destruction caused by the tropical storm that ravaged parts of eastern India on 13 April 2010.

Chief Justice Balakrishnan visit
Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, visited Moscow on 13-14 April, 2010 and had a fruitful meeting on 13 April 2010 with Justice Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Lebedev, Chairman, Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, at his invitation.

“Rangoli 2010” Celebrated

On the Cultural front, the Indian Students’ Association of the Tver State Medical Academy celebrated Indian Cultural Festival “Rangoli 2010” at the Academy on 10 April.  About 1000 people attended the event. President of the Academy, Prof. B. N. Davidov, along with Vice-Chancellors Prof. D. V. Bazenov and Prof. D. V. Kileynikov and Dean, Prof. A. G. Ivanov, were present on the occasion.  The Embassy of India was represented by Shri Manish Prabhat, Director, JNCC. The programme began with an exhibition depicting various aspects of India including cuisines, ‘rangoli’ made from different types of colored rice, photo presentations on great Indian writers, social workers, sportspersons, corporate entities, freedom fighters and astronauts as well as Indo-Russian friendship and cooperation, States of India, religions, nature, wildlife, architecture, industries, infrastructure and dances.  The cultural programme featured 22 compositions including Kathak, Bharatanatyam, folk dances of Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Punjab and popular dances from Bollywood. The annual presentation of “Rangoli” by the Indian students of the Tver State Medical Academy has over the years become a landmark event in the cultural calendar of the town and is received with great enthusiasm. The 670 students from India at the Academy constitute the largest group of foreign students.

“Odissi Jivan Nritya” performance held

On the occasion of 15th Anniversary of her group Odissi Jivan Nritya, Ms. Vitalina Laboch, JNCC teacher, presented a cultural programme featuring Indian classical dances by JNCC teachers and their students.  Shri P P Shukla, Ambassador of India, graced the occasion.  The programme, which was held at the DP Dhar hall of the Embassy, began with traditional lighting of lamp by Ambassador, Ms. Laboch and Shri Manish Prabhat.  Ms. Laboch also presented a slide show depicting the history of her group, her stay and performances in India.  The event, which was attended by about 140 people, ended with a reception.

Yoga Master classes held
On 19 April Dr. N Suresh Babu, JNCC Yoga Teacher conducted a Master Class at Yaroslavlbased Yoga Centre “Shanti”.  The Master Class was attended by about 10 students. A short power point presentation on the history of Yoga and its use in daily life was also shown during the Master Class.
Classical/ Bollywood competition held
Yaroslavl-based enthusiast of Indian culture who has also studied Indian classical dances, Ms. Tatiana Lastochkina organized a competition of Indian classical and Bollywood dances and music on 18 April at Yaroslavl.  The competition was followed by a Gala Concert featuring performances by winners of the competition. About 500 people, including Mr. Stanislav G Trakhtenberg, Director of Academy of Circus Art and President of Yaroslavl State Circus, attended the programme.  Indian students studying at the Yaroslavl State Medical Academy (YSMA) were specially invited to the Competition and the Gala Concert. About 50 participants from five Russian regions and cities of Russia participated in the event. On behalf of JNCC, books and CDs on India were presented to the winners and organizers of the event.

YSMA receives Embassy representative
Shri Sanjay Vedi, Deputy Director, JNCC visited YSMA and met Prof. Alexey V Pavlov, Rector, and Prof. Yuri Georgievich Kirdyanov, Associate Professor and Head of International Division, on 19 April.  The authorities of YSMAwere glad to receive Embassy of India’s representative at their Academy and assured all possible help to Indian students whenever needed.

Russian Indologist passes away
Ms. Natalia Romanovna Guseva, a leading Russian Indologist, passed away on 21 April in Moscow at the age of 96.  She was the author of more than 160 scientific works on culture and ancient forms of religions as well as the book ‘The Indians and the Slavs’, among others. She was also a playwright. She had translated Ramayana and Mahabharata in Russian for children. These editions had enjoyed special popularity in the Russian literary world. A delegation from Embassy of India led by Shri Rajiv Sinha, Counsellor (Education) attended her funeral on 24 April.
