'Deep friendship and trust mark India-Russia ties'

Conference on 65 years of India-Russia ties, Moscow, 13.04.2012

Indian Foreign Secretary Mr. Ranjan Mathai spoke at the Russian Embassy reception marking 65 years of India-Russia Diplomatic Relations. Below is the excerpt of his speech:

“Our External Affairs Minister was in Moscow last week and has already flagged off the celebrations for this landmark event on 13 April. I am happy to be present at the beginning of an exciting year ahead. I wish to thank Ambassador Kadakin for his role in pushing this relationship forward as a genuine friend of India. Of the last 65 years of our relationship Ambassador Kadakin has been personally involved for almost 45.

We speak today of ‘special and privileged’ Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. This unique and multi-dimensional relationship did not come about suddenly. It has been built brick-by-brick over the last 65 years, keeping the mutual interests of both our peoples foremost in mind. That is why it has produced concrete and constructive results in the widest possible fields of cooperation. In the decades gone by our relations have gained enormously in strength. I am happy that this evening many of the bricklayers are present, as are some of those who provided the mortar to hold the bricks in place.

'Russian tourist flows to India will continue to grow in 2012'

Ambassador inaugurates "India Pavilion" at MITT, Moscow, March 21
Ambassador of India to Russia, HE Mr. Ajai Malhotra, inaugurated the “India Pavilion” at the 19th International Travel & Tourism Exhibition (MITT) in Moscow, Russia, on March 21, 2012. Twenty seven Indian travel, tour, hotel and spa companies are participating in MITT, which continues till March 24, 2012.

Meeting with the Indian participants, Ambassador Malhotra recalled that in June 11, 2011, the Indian Embassy in Moscow had liberalized the visa regime for Russian tourists visiting India. The Embassy and the Indian Consulates in St. Petersburg and Vladivostok have since been issuing six month multiple entry visas in three working days, compared to one month single entry visas over a considerably longer processing period earlier. Ambassador Malhotra noted that Russia had reciprocated with a more liberal visa regime for Indian citizens effective December 1, 2011.

Ambassador Malhotra informed that tourist visas issued to Russians by the Embassy increased by 24% in 2011, compared to 2010. He expressed satisfaction that Russian tourist flows to India continue to grow at a healthy pace during 2012. Moreover, Russian tourists were now increasingly venturing beyond traditionally popular Indian destinations like Delhi-Agra-Jaipur, Goa, Haridwar-Rishikesh, and Kulu-Manali, to such places as Kerala, Orissa, Ladakh, and the Andaman Islands. “India is a complete tourist destination and we warmly welcome our Russian friends to enjoy the hospitality of our richly diverse country”, he emphasized. Ambassador Malhotra also released at MITT the very first Russian language issue of the quarterly magazine ‘Ayurveda’, which he felt would evoke great interest among many Russian readers.
